Sorry I may be commenting on a completely different subject here, however I just can't resist to tell you some of my impressions on your news channels. Frankly speaking, I have been watching Cable tv since its opening, which should be talking about nearly 15 years time. Throughout these years, I have been seeing you guys putting a huge amount of effort and resources in various programmes' productions. Mass human resources, especially have been invested on the news channels. However, as time passes by, and with fiercer competitions within the market, I would say you guys have somehow neglected one of the most important aspects of television/news broadcast, the visual impact. I believe you should have also paid attention to other so-called competitors' or even other international news channels movements right? If so, you should have noticed, no offence, how much you guys have fallen back on the graphics development these recent years. For instance, your major competitor which shall supposedly be creating the biggest threat to you guys, NXW, though has begun their news channel for less than 2 yrs, they do achieve a sound reputation. Undoubtedly they don't have as many resources as you guys do, they have been improving aggressively in a very short period of time. And a more important point to highlight, they have created such a great visual system with their tight budget. If you tried to look at your news channel and theirs on the same time, you can already see how much they have proceeded ahead of you guys. Let's look at the problems I consider you guys are facing now, first of all, the openings of various news casts have been used for more than 6 to 7 years right? It's really time to change them!! Tv B has been changing theirs every 2 years or so, and look at how much you guys have done... secondly, the live studio, I know sometimes it's hard to redecorate an existing studio, which have been used daily, but I bet you guys really have to consider the possibility of rejuvenating it, as it's getting boring and outdated looking at it everyday. (Virtual sets surely can definitely do a great job in those gap periods!) Meanwhile, I would say it's actually not too good to use virtual set especially in prime time period, I know it saves a lot of space, and costs, however they just look so fake, and will be extremely horrible if the sets weren't made in a great effect, which somehow this case also happens on your channel as well. A suggestion for consideration: look at the trend of other news channels, they have been inputting huge sized LCD screens in their studios (e.g. (foreign: BBC and CNN, local: NXW), it will be as flexible as using the virtual set, and most importantly they look so REAL, and definitely won't make the audiences feel like watching a highly computerized sets. However, I know they do cost a fortune. Thirdly, animations, I reckon have always been the weakest aspect on your news channels. For instance, the name cards or even the info cards, which are shown above the ticker, have already been used for more than 7 years... how come you guys just can’t give any more effort in changing it? I have seen you guys using clips from foreign news agencies/channels, and I am quite shocked to see sometimes even the ones from Indonesia or even Pakistan have a much advanced system! (Noted: The term animations I am saying here is the ones made in high standard, like those on CNN, BBC, SKY TV, or even CHANNEL NEWSASIA.) I was told that most of the well known news channels use the animations system created by a company called: Vizrt, and they have done great jobs in making a thorough and standardised display system. Though should be quite costly to create a new set, it shall be a worthy investment as they can be used for at least a few years, and will definitely be better looking than the ones you guys putting up everyday (they all look so much like being made with powerpoint) AND most importantly they will definitely refresh the total visual impact on your channel. Fourthly, the time/weather display on the top of the screen, have not even be changed since your channel started broadcasting. Can’t you guys just kindly decorate them a bit? And may as well, the local/world weather forecast displays have also be used for so many years, it’s just time to change them. Lavender, sorry for creating such a mess here, however it’s just that I feel there’s a need to tell you, and couldn’t find a pathway to express. To be frank, if you guys really do look into the suggestions I made above, it will be more like rejuvenating probably most of the things you see on the screen (except the ticker on the bottom). I do know they all cost a fortune, and you guys may not feel the the need to change at the moment. But what I only want to do is to let you recognize the major problems your news channel is facing now. I really have no comment on the human resources on your channel, as up until this minute, I still consider them as the best participants in the news broadcast field, and they are all doing great jobs.
